1965 Mercedes W111 250 SE (coupe)
Vehicle details
It needs a lot of work, but it's not a bad 'buy it now' price of $8,500 for this 250 SE offered in Texas on Ebay USA. The rare V8 models of this series are by far the most desirable, but the 250 6-cylinder powered coupe is by no means in oversupply, with just over 5,000 units originally produced.
The paint is quite poor, and the interior sadly has seen much better days, but overall the car appears solid enough to be worth saving despite having to throw a fair bit of cash at rust repairs, and trim work. The saddest part to look at is the dash, whose normally ornate timber finish around the instruments and across the fascia has obviously seen a bit too much sun and possibly moisture throughout its life.
Despite the drawbacks, most things look like they're still in place, which saves half the battle if you're starting from scratch. Although the engine is all there, it hasn't been running for 3 years according to the seller, and would need a good checkup - probably the first thing you'd do so you could get it on and off trailers and between repair shops until she's roadworthy. Although the wheels are not original, we'd probably keep them on - they provide this Benz with a nice stance through their width and offset, making the car look well balanced at all angles - and the winged knock-offs are a nice touch.
Hopefully this will find a nice home with someone wanting to restore it for what it is. We've seen a few 250 coupes chopped into convertibles over time, and think it such a shame to lose the beautiful lines that come with the coupe body, and that unique C-pillar. Besides, it already has the optional sun-roof!
