We've always been a fan of the 500E / E500 here at Classic Register, writing one of our earliest articles on these cars as 'modern classics' in early 2014. This 1994 model (available here on Ebay USA) represents the last full production year, noting that a further 120 cars were built in 1995. Less than 10,500 of these were built in total. Of that total, around 1,500 were sold in the US, making them exceptionally rare and desirable. The vast majority were sold in Germany, however, we would expect that a number of these cars will find their way to the US in the long term due to their great following.

For those not familiar, the W124 E500 (originally badged "500E" until 1993) was created in cooperation with Porsche, who made substantial modifications to these cars in order to produce what many consider the ultimate performance sedan. Each car reportedly took 18 days to complete, with the end result being the famous "sheep in wolf's clothing", with the 5.0L M119 V8 producing 326hp (243kw). This is a very impressive figure for an early 90s V8, and the modifications didn't stop there. The cars had a wider track and fenders, and significant improvements to the suspension, brakes and chassis to properly handle the power of the modified 5.0. These late 1994 models also benefited from larger 320mm front brakes taken from the 600SL, as well as a few other styling changes.

This current auction will be a good opportunity to see what the US market is like for these rare cars in non-pristine condition. This example shows signs of normal wear and tear, and has 147,000 Miles on the clock. We'll update this page at the end of the auction to confirm what this example goes for.
